Dirty Rain

Dirty Rain
Dirty rain won't wash off my hands
the gas tank was running low
they say lightning don't strike in the same place twice,
but who are they to know
so you catch it in a bottle,
and you drink it down real slow,
as you stumble drunk to his doorstep,
but you know he's never home
we've been working ourselves blind
trying to salvage what we can
of who we are now, and who we were
when we began, I've been hitting every red light home
and this fires been burning out
push your window wide, and let me out
your daddy lives in a downtown hotel,
and your brother used to live on the street
but now he lives in jail, and you're one with the styles
a real streetwalking, heartbreaking kid,
you've got nothing to lose,
and you wouldn't let anyone know even if you did

Borrowed suit, Secondhand Dress
If I wish upon a bottle,
and it breaks upon the floor,
would you let me in tomorrow?
would you offer anything more?
you smelt smoke upon his fingers,
you ran your fingers through his hair,
you say this little life of his ain't going nowhere,
but wherever he's going, you'll follow him there
caught between the moon and New York City
caught in a gutter going insane
the sky cracked blue like a bar fight bruise,
we were running in the rain
tell me one of us is holding,
if not then one of us has got to buy,
well you keep on selling your parents postcards
of an old skyline, if it'll keep them off your back
for a little while
why do we keep on living like this?
borrowed suit, and a secondhand dress

Blackmarket Blues
she said "honey I'll pawn my ring,
dye my hair, change my name,
I don't wanna hear another word out of you,
I shot my sugar daddy with a .45,
stabbed his old lady with a shiny knife,
burned all of my credit cards for fuel"
Oh I threw myself down a line,
I got high, I came alive, I came around,
I came down for you
48 hours in a pitch black cell,
threw my old soul into a wishing well,
kissed my lips to a sweaty dollar bill,
counted my quarters in the kitchen sink,
cocked my rifle and took a drink,
caught the last bus to Bethlehem
Saw a light flash on top of the hill,
caught a black bullet in the side of my skull,
fell to my knees in a puddle of wine,
my eyes closed and my ears rang out,
pictured myself wearing a big straw hat,
rowing a boat, and singin' to you

Dead End Kid
there's a hotel burning,
there's a wild hurricane turning,
she was searchin' through the curtains,
for a beast of burden
but if she showed me peace,
I'd rest my head on her bended knees,
I would be your slave,
write my name upon your grave
there was a time when she felt it,
back when I was a dead end kid,
I used to stand there on the corner,
trying hard to ignore her

Smokestack Thunder

Smokestack Thunder
smokestack lightning,
shining just like gold,
to have and to hold
you catch it in your pocket,
you'd better run on home and lock it up,
you'd better run on home and lock it up
your daddy died in a dumpster,
your mother dances with the thunder,
dance with the thunder
smokestack thunder,
wakes up your neighbourhood,
wakes up the neighbourhood
smokestack lightning,
shining just like gold,
and crashing down the road

Queen Of The Street

Queen Of The Street
She strums an old guitar with a rusty nickel,
and tells everyone she meets her last name is Ramone,
'cause in her mind she's the queen of the street,
and you're not going to change her mind
well she'll even let you take her home,
but she'll leave you at the door,
there was a time when she would let me in,
but she doesn't do that anymore
'cause in her mind she's the queen of the street,
and you're not going to change her mind
well she don't need no saviour,
she can save herself on her own,
and you can tell by the tracks on her arms,
that she's a long way from home
'cause in her mind she's the queen of the street,
and you're not going to change her mind
well she's nobody's child,
and the law can't touch her at all,
I used to think I knew her,
but I don't think i really knew her at all
'cause in her mind she's the queen of the street,
and you're not going to change her mind

Dark Of Love

Dark Of Love
please, throw down a line,
when the factory doors are closing,
and the liquor stores are frozen shut,
I was on tv once, they interviewed a few of us,
for witnessing a robbery
There's a little place I know,
some people stay, some people go,
and the drinks all flow like dynamite,
and they all know the ones you like
what if I lay my body down,
in the middle of the road, in the middle of the town,
and waited for the nearest bus,
to bring me back to the dark of love?

Burning Down

Burning Down
I've got my own vices,
just like everybody here,
you could call it celebration,
or you could call it fear,
call me when you burn out
let it out, let it out,
put it on a shelf,
if you don't want it up there,
take it down yourself,
call me when you're burning down
you think you do, but you don't know,
call me when you burn out
there's a lot of people out here,
who think that they exist,
but if you want to the front of the line,
you've got to wait on the list,
call me when you're burning down

Cutting Room Floor

Cutting Room Floor
you darken my door,
your hair upon the pillow,
like a sleepy golden storm,
well honey, I've been to this movie before,
and I know how it ends,
'cause honey I wrote the script,
and you're on the cutting room floor
Ive read your writing on the wall,
it's a shame that you can't spell,
do you have any idea how crazy it makes you sound
when you say that I'm not burnt out,
and you claim you always were?
well honey, I wrote the book,
and it's a bestseller
they all stop to take a look,
while you're crying in the street,
makeup running all down your cheek,
well honey baby, maybe we're just fools,
you and I, too drunk to see the light, you and I,
well honey, I'm too drunk to drive home,
so can i stay the night?

I Saw A Ghost Last Night

I Saw a Ghost Last Night
I saw a ghost last night,
and I thought it was you,
I saw a shadow on the wall,
by the light of the moon,
I saw a ghost last night,
and I thought it was me,
he was wearing all of my clothes,
but he said it was just a bad dream
when the lights go down,
where do they go?
someone has to know
I saw a ghost last night,
and I thought it was my friend,
I hadn't seen him for a long long time,
so it was nice to see him again
